Introduction to Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient system medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. The word “Ayurveda” comes from the Sanskrit words “Ayur” (life) and “Veda” (science), meaning “the Science of Life.” It is a holistic system that emphasizes on the balance of body, mind and spirit to promote health and prevent disease.

Core Principles of Ayurveda

The Three Doshas (Biological Energies)
These elements combine in the human body to form three doshas:

Each person has a unique combination of these doshas, known as their Prakriti (bodily constitution).

The Five Elements / Pancha Mahabhutas

Ayurveda is based on the idea that the universe is composed of five elements:

Earth (Prithvi)

Fire (Agni)

Air (Vayu)

Water (Jal)

Space/Ether (Akasha)

What is Health according to Ayurveda?

Acharya Sushrutha defines Health as,

According to Acharya Sushruta, a person is healthy when there is a state of balance among the Doshas, proper digestion (Agni), well-nourished tissues (Dhatus), and efficient elimination of waste (Malas). True health also includes clarity of the soul (Atma), senses (Indriyas), and mind (Mana).

Disease is viewed as an imbalance among these systems.

Acharya Charaka defines disease as,
"Rogastu Dosha Vaishamyam, Dosha Samyam Arogata" Disease occurs when Doshas are imbalanced; health is restored when they are balanced

Prevention Over Cure

Ayurveda places strong emphasis on prevention through

Daily routines (dinacharya)

Seasonal routines (ritucharya)

Proper diet

Lifestyle and

Mental well-being

The Origin of the Ayurveda Lineage

Knowledge of Ayurveda Emerged from Lord Brahma (Creator), 5000 Years ago

Then the science branched out to Bharadwaja, Dhanawanthri and Vashishta. Thus, Bhardwaja, 700 BC, is said to be the father of Ayurveda for the human race.
From Bharadwaja, the knowledge of Ayurveda spread to all the eligible rishis (sages) and satvik people. Ayurveda was too extensive for a single person to absorb; therefore, Sage Bharadwaj made 8 branches of Ayurveda. These branches are specialized sciences. Rishi Atreya Punarvasu, was one of the sages who passed on his ayurvedic wisdom to his students. Agnivesha, student of Atreya scripted Charak Samhita. This text is one of the best for Kaya Chikitsa Tantra - "The Ayurvedic Concept of Internal Medicine (Kaya Chikitsa Tantra: The Ayurvedic Concept of Internal Medicine).

Branches of Ayurveda

How are they interconnected?

Ayurveda and quantum science operate in very different domains-one is ancient and holistic, the other is modern and mathematical. There’s beauty in exploring how traditional knowledge can inspire modern inquiry but it must be grounded in evidence and critical thinking. It’s important to distinguish between metaphor, philosophy, and verified science. It provides preventive healthcare, disease management, and longevity.

The convergence of Ayurveda and quantum physics offers a compelling framework for understanding health, consciousness, and healing. This interdisciplinary approach bridges ancient wisdom with modern science, providing insights into the energetic and informational aspects of human physiology and psychology.

How Ayurveda was perceived

Vagbhatacharya, in Ashtanga Hridaya states that Lord Brahma is the creator of Ayurveda. It is said that Lord Brahma perceived the knowledge of Ayurveda through his divine senses, memorized it and then passed onto Ashwini Kumaras who then passed onto Indra and so on. This theory suggests that Ayurveda, like Quantum Physics, was pre-existing which is beyond human perception and interpretation.
The intersection of Ayurveda and quantum science is a fascinating topic that blends ancient wisdom with modern theoretical physics.
Quantum science (or quantum physics) studies phenomena at the atomic and subatomic levels.

Quantum cognition and ayurveda

Recent studies suggest that Ayurvedic concepts align with principles of quantum cognition, an emerging field that applies quantum theory to cognitive processes. For instance, the Ayurvedic principle of Prabhava (effect) parallels the non-intuitive effects observed in quantum phenomena, while Ojas (vital energy) represents a form of subtle energy akin to energy states in quantum systems. This synthesis offers a comprehensive framework for understanding the mind-body connection in psychology, emphasizing balance, interconnectedness, and the dynamic nature of cognition and health.
